The Strokes are once again dipping their toes into the political sphere – this time, in support of Mayoral Candidate Maya Wiley.

The NYC indie icons will descend upon Irving Plaza this Saturday – June 12 – for a full capacity show, continuing the band’s trend of supporting outsider candidates, like their 2020 push for Bernie Sanders.

“Maya Wiley is the most grateful, gracious, and kind-hearted bad-ass I’ve ever witnessed,” The Strokes’ frontman Julian Casablancas said via press release. “The more I know her, the more I know that she is absolutely the best choice to be NYC’s next mayor. This feels like a once in a lifetime opportunity to help elevate an incredible person to a position of power where they can protect the public — instead of the usual — managing their exploitation. She is the only leading candidate without a PAC, so it’s a privilege to use art to support a non-corporate candidate fighting against difficult odds. She is a benevolent warrior; at City Hall she got the cop who killed Eric Garner fired. We need to elect trustworthy people so when hard decisions need to be made behind closed doors, we know the people of NYC will be protected and in the best hands possible.”

As for the event’s COVID protocol, an announcement reads, “Irving Plaza is complying with New York State mandates that require all guests to be fully vaccinated for this full-capacity event. All guests must have proof that they have a full COVID-19 vaccination (final dose 14 days before the event). The 18+ concert will also deliver all tickets as mobile tickets, enabling a more contactless entry experience.”

The NYC mayoral primary will take place on June 22, followed by a general election on Nov. 2.
